Brian Kelly founded BKCM in 2013 after experiencing a well-publicized conversion about the investment potential of Bitcoin and its supporting blockchain technology, an epiphany he chronicled in his book The Bitcoin Big Bang. As CEO, he brings more than two decades of experience managing global macro strategies, as well as building investment funds and independent investment firms from the ground up.

In addition to his roles at BKCM, Brian is the lead portfolio manager for the Rex BKCM ETF, an actively managed ETF focused on digital assets and blockchain, offered by REX Shares LLC. He is a sought-after commentator: a regular CNBC contributor, on Fast Money and other programs; and a frequent keynote speaker at crypto and blockchain conferences around the world. In 2015, Brian was named one of the “30 Most Influential People in Bitcoin” by Inside Bitcoin.

Throughout his career, Brian has specialized in trading multiple asset classes, cross-border investments and risk arbitrage—all crucial skillsets for managing alternative investment strategies. Prior to founding BKCM and partnering with REX, he was co-founder and Managing Partner of Shelter Harbor Capital LLC where he managed a Macro Hedge Fund. He was also a co-founder of MKM Partners, a brokerage firm catering to institutional investment managers.

Brian is a graduate of the University of Vermont and received an MBA from Babson Graduate School of Business. He has served on the Board of Advisors for tZERO Company, Wall Street Blockchain Alliance, and The CME Bitcoin Futures Board.

Michael Sofaer

Michael is a software and systems engineer who also bring valuable experience as an executive, consultant, team leader, and educator. His CTO role at the firm builds on more than 12 years in systems architecture and development. As Chief Architect and Chief Technology Officer at Tradehill, Michael recruited and led a team of engineers that built a bitcoin exchange, which at its peak, was the second largest in the world. His comprehensive background covers patent research, data analytics, engineering, information systems design, and app building.

Most recently, he was the recipient of a Knight Foundation grant to develop a virtual currency aimed at supporting philanthropic causes—one built on top of the Stellar and Ripple applications, serving as a bridge to hard currency donations, as well as a crowdsourced vehicle for identifying deserving projects. Michael has also taught web development at the NYC-based General Assembly.

As a consultant, he has worked at Pivotal Labs, a boutique software consulting company focused on testing, pair programming, and developer culture. And he currently serves as a member of the Board of PLC Diagnostics, where he advises the company on joint-venture management, intellectual property, and the science of molecular diagnostics.

Kevin Lu is a researcher and trader joining BKCM with experience in both equities and credit. Prior to joining BKCM, he spent three years at AQR, one of the world’s premier quantitative investing firms. At AQR, Kevin led equity portfolio construction development and quantitative development for the credit team. He began his career at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, focusing primarily on quantitative alpha equity strategies and smart tax-aware passive strategies. In his work at Cubist Systematic Strategies, Kevin developed a specialty in equity statistical arbitrage.

Currently, Kevin applies this expertise at BKCM developing stand-alone systematic trading strategies, and providing quantitative analytics to assist the firm’s discretionary trading team. He holds a B.S. in Mathematics, summa cum laude, from Rutgers University.

Derek Kim

As Head of Research, Derek brings extensive experience in investment analysis, start-up entrepreneurship, and cryptocurrency trading.

At BKCM, Derek leads primary research and trading for the top 100 tokens by market capitalization. Prior to joining the firm, he spent three years at Goldman Sachs, in both their London and New York offices, as an analyst focused on opportunistic and hedge fund strategies. Derek also led an expansion strategy in the Northeast for Ritual.co, an app start-up that has since secured $53mm in its latest round of financing. He is a fluent Korean speaker and brings a multi-disciplined investment approach that has proven to be an invaluable asset for BKCM.

Emily manages information flow within the firm and serves as Executive Assistant to the CEO. Her administrative role covers relationship management, business administration, data management, as well as communications. Most recently, Emily spent three years at Zirtual Inc. as Executive Assistant to the CEO—the company provides a range of range of virtual services to independent entrepreneurs, from invoicing, to travel planning, to personal assistants, to virtual marketing.

Emily has worked across multiple industries, including pre-school education, utilities/energy, and digital media, all with a focus on project management, logistics and communications. She is a graduate of Georgia State University with a focus on Business Administration and Management.
